Survey of Entering Student Engagement

The Survey of Entering Student Engagement (SENSE) helps OCCC discover why some entering students persist and succeed and others do not.

Administered during the fall term, SENSE asks students to reflect on their earliest experiences (academic and services-related) with the college.  This survey is used as a tool that OCCC can use to inform decisions toward institutional improvements. Similar to the CCSSE survey, the data is compared with other Community College students around the nation, or students in Oregon.

Example questions include:

Q9. Of the courses you enrolled in during YOUR FIRST SEMESTER/QUARTER at this college, how many did you drop after the first day of class?

a) None

b) One

c) Two

d) Three

e) Four or more

Q11. The following statements are about this college’s orientation for new students. (Mark all that apply)

a) I took part in an online orientation prior to the beginning of classes

b) I attended an on-campus orientation prior to the beginning of classes

c) I enrolled in an orientation course as part of my course schedule during my first semester/quarter at this college

d) I was not aware of a college orientation

e) I was unable to participate in orientation due to scheduling or other issues
